Dumpster History
The modern dumpster was patented by George Dempster in 1935 when he was the mayor of Knoxville. Dempster and his brothers owned a construction company. So, he fully understood the problem presented by waste transport. He started working on a solution.
His initial system involved pulleys attached to a motorised vehicle. The original bins had pins on the sides. The pins were used to raise the bins, which had a rear-hinged gate for waste disposal. In 1937, Nashville, Tennessee, took the lead and became the first city to adopt dumpsters as a city waste disposal system.
Efficient Garbage Collection
In the days before dumpsters city waste presented a significant problem. There were piles of rubbish everywhere, and the only way to clear it was to manually handle it all, loading and unloading garbage by hand. The dumpster enabled clean and contained garbage that could be carted away, and the dumpster was quickly replaced. The ease of collection and replacement ensured no interruption in garbage collection.
Dumpsters in Sacramento and elsewhere have helped to reduce the problem of waste collection and removal. Though we don’t think of its origins, we can thank George Dempster for making waste removal less labor-intensive and more efficient.
